Trained as an x-ray astrophysicist Dr. Edwards has programmed over 60,000 lines of code in his life in six different computer languages, designed space missions for the moon, Mars and Europa as well as the interstellar medium.  He has designed cryogenic sensors for rockets, laser-driven cryocoolers, sychrotron mirrors, and long-lived autonomous oceanographic floats.  This is in addition to his most famous work of developing the designs for the first viable space elevator.
